Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to common questions about U-LITS and livestock management in Uganda.

What is U-LITS?

U-LITS stands for Uganda Livestock Information Tracking System. It is a comprehensive digital platform for livestock management, tracking, and traceability across all 134 districts of Uganda. The system covers farm registration, animal identification, health monitoring, movement permits, slaughter traceability, and a livestock marketplace.

Who can use U-LITS?

U-LITS is designed for all stakeholders in Uganda’s livestock value chain: individual farmers, District Veterinary Officers (DVOs), Sub-County Veterinary Officers (SCVOs), livestock traders, transporters, slaughter house operators, butchery owners, veterinary drug suppliers, and government officials at MAAIF.

Is U-LITS free to use?

Basic account registration and farm management features are available to all registered users. Certain services such as movement permit applications and marketplace transactions may have associated fees. Contact our support team for the latest pricing information.

What livestock types does U-LITS support?

U-LITS currently supports four livestock species: cattle (dairy, beef, and mixed breeds including Friesian and Ankole), goats, sheep, and pigs.

Can I use U-LITS offline?

Yes. Both the Android and iOS mobile apps are built with offline-first architecture. You can register animals, log health events, record vaccinations, and capture GPS coordinates without an internet connection. All data synchronises automatically when connectivity is restored.

What is an E-ID and V-ID?

Every animal in U-LITS receives two forms of identification: an E-ID (Electronic ID) which is the primary digital identifier in the system, and a V-ID (Visual ID) which is a physical ear tag number visible on the animal. Together with the farm’s LHC (Livestock Holding Code), these create a complete identification chain.

How do movement permits work?

Farmers or traders apply for a digital movement permit through a 4-step online process. The application is first reviewed by the local SCVO, then forwarded to the DVO for approval. Once approved, the permit includes a QR code that can be scanned at checkpoints along the route.

How does slaughter traceability work?

U-LITS tracks the entire chain from live animal to meat cut. When an animal arrives at a registered slaughter house, ante-mortem and post-mortem inspections are recorded. The carcass is graded, weighed, and distributed into quarters. Each cut receives a printable label with a barcode linking back to the original animal.

What diseases does U-LITS track?

U-LITS monitors all major livestock diseases in Uganda including Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD), Lumpy Skin Disease, Brucellosis, Tuberculosis (TB), East Coast Fever (ECF), Anthrax, Mastitis, Pneumonia, and various parasitic infections.
